NETHERLANDS: ROUTES
The Netherlands has so far been one of my favourite cities in terms of its beauty. It's a city where I myself felt very content and happy whilst walking through the streets. With a picturesque view every turn you take, from the main streets to the backstreets were full of character and flavour. The most interesting and most obvious I picked up on the whole is the journey within the city. Routes. Different paths people take to different places and why.

I stumbled upon this great project accidently through a night tour with my hostel in Rotterdam. A "crowdfunded public infrastructure project" known to Rotterdam studio ZUS. 400-metre-long pedestrian bridge and still counting.. This great project has gained 8,000 people to sponser a bit to contribute and be part of the urban construction. By allowing the public and the community to take part, they're automatically letting them in with an introduction rather than just throwing a building or a structure at them to deal with. The bridge's route runs through a building and across roads and railways to connect three previously disconnected areas of the city. The building from which i've taken the picture from on the left has been a rather dull and neglected building for years, and when they opened up a small roof gardening type space on the top floor, ZUS was interested to get more people involved and appreciate its small existence.
Luchtsingel Pedestrian bridge

Using my research so far, I have concluded that Hulme, in progress for it's development in uniting the community together, regardless of age, gender or occupation, it will require routes and paths that aid this connection. Project Ribbon aims to acheive this, taking inspiration from the success of Luchtsingel, in order to encourage crowdfunding opportunities to expand the 'Ribbon' across Hulme.
